Ethical use of the WebWhat does ethical use of the web mean and why is it important to you. The word ethical means doing what is right. Online ethical use is respecting yourself and other peoples privacy, feelings and property. On this page we are going to look at the ethical use of Copyright and Plagiarism.
Copyright What is copyright and why do you need to know about it? "Copyright is a form of protection given to the authors or creators of “original works of authorship,” that includes literary, dramatic, musical, artistic and other intellectual works." (Copyright Society of the U.S.A.). When you write an essay, create artwork or make a video they are all examples of 'original works of authorship'. You are the author of the essay, artwork or video and automatically own the copyright to it. Many people think because music, videos, text are online that you can just download or copy it and it is ok, but that is not necessarily the case. Just like people need to ask your permission to use your work on the internet you have to seek permission if you want to use or copy someone else's work. With online literary, dramatic, musical, artistic and other intellectual works that you are allowed to use, "always give credit to the person or company who owns the copyright." (Media Smart, 2015). You can get a free copyright licence to protect your work from Creative Commons. Creative Commons not only copyrights your work but, allows you to share your work with other people while being protected at the same time.

Most of the time plagiarism can be avoided by citing the persons work. Citing means acknowledging that you got your information from a certain person and that you have given enough details of that person's work that it can be easily found. For example I have got my information from the web page http://www.plagiarism.org/, the title of the page is Plagiarism Best Practices and the web page was created by iParadigms in 2014. The web site Educational Place has great guidelines on how to cite books, magazines, internet, videos and lots more. It is worth a look if you and to know how to cite. Remember you would want someone to cite your work, so do the right thing and cite their work. |
